The legend of the Mondsee Dragon
A long, long time ago there lived a dragon on the craggy Drachenwand rock-face. The fire-breathing dragon fell in love with the vicar’s cook. In his desperation he decided to venture from his rock-face and steal the cook. He flew to the vicarage, grabbed the maid with his claws and flew back to his mountain home. But the cook not only loved to cook, she loved to eat as well. She was so heavy that the dragon lost his balance and dropped the cook against the rock-face making a hole in the side of the mountain.
Mondsee Lake in the Salzkammergut
Every week the Waldhof minibus heads to Lake Mondsee with its bike trailer. On arrival the bikes are unloaded, helmets donned and we are off! The cycle route leads us along the shoreline of one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut. The Mondsee parish church dedicated to St. Michael is particularly beautiful. The Benedictine collegiate church from the 12 Century is one of the biggest Gothic churches in Austria. It was also the location for the marriage scene in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s famous musical film The Sound of Music. That’s one of the reason it is so popular among international visitors.
